Did you miss me??

Two whole weeks I've gone without posting. I've thought about it several times, but my hands haven't made it to the keyboard--there've just been lots of mental posts. ;)

It's all done. School, that is.

The kids had a half-day last Thursday and have been home since then.

I still love being home, crazy as it can be. :) :)

Today was actually the second day of the rest of our lives--also known as homeschooling!

Yes, we have decided to homeschool for the next year. We just see too many gaps in our kids, and I am beyond frustrated that even at a Christian school Danielle doesn't know her alphabet but was learning to flip people off.

Yeah.

I get lots of comments like "Wow! Homeschooling six!" which make me wonder if I should be concerned about the fact that one teacher teaches 16-20 of them (or more!) at a time in the schools. If I can't teach six of them, why on earth should I be surprised that they aren't getting enough help when they're in a large classroom? :)

So this will be our new normal. Over the summer we're just doing worksheets from curriculum workbooks based on their last grade level. I want to see exactly where our gaps are and where we need to focus for each child. It will be a challenge but I know it will be worth it!

Congrats! I think that is awesome!
P.S. I want to be you when I grow up! Especially the leaving a legacy of adoption part!

Welcome to my world, Sister.

Homeschooling 6 isn't always an easy row to hoe but it's worth every second. If you get a second -and I know those are hard to come by- go to my blog and look for the link to Ann Voskamp (also homeschooler of 6)on homeschooling. It is inspirational. I think it's somewhere close to the most recent post I put up but I can't remember.

I think you will like it, Courtney! You are definitely jumping in to the deep end of the homeschooling pool by starting 6 at once. I just began one at a time in kindergarten! Take this next year as your learning year, pressure off. Can't wait to hear how it goes! I am available to talk homeschool anytime!

Hi Mark and Courtney- and kids!! Hello from California (from Anna, Tim and CJ). I was wondering what resources you are using for homeschooling? I have found some great tools at www.confessionsofahomeschooler.com I have some preschool binders for CJ using her stuff. All her lessons are downloadable and free, it just takes some time to download them all. She also has meal planning menus for every month. Anyways, just thought I'd pass it along. We miss you guys!!

Knowing you - homeschooling won't be a problem. You keep a schedule, have tons of self discipline and will continue to keep the kids socially active. All of which are the downfalls to homeschooling (from a public school perspective). I've got tons of folk songs and singing games if you need ideas of songs to teach them.

Tonya, I follow Ann's blog and love reading her stuff. She is very inspiring to me. And reading her post about homeschooling really hit home. Especially with us missing so much of our kids' early years, I really feel they need the time with us now.

Thanks, Mary! I think it will help that I really only have two main levels--2nd grade and kindergarten, so that will help. The boys aren't on the exact same level for every subject, but pretty close. This year will definitely be a learning year!

Luba, I have TONS of pictures and just keep not taking the time to post them! I'll try to get some up soon! :)

ANNA!!!! How great to hear from you guys! I have links all over the place to homeschooling resources. I've been following several homeschooling families for awhile now and taking notes on their curriculum. I've also looked into different curriculum trying to decide what would work best for our kids. I think we'll be doing a hodge-podge at this point. ;) Thanks for the link!

Thanks, SB! I have days where I feel like this will be totally do-able and other days where I think it will never work. :) :) I'm trying to just take it one day at a time right now, and figure it's going to take a few years to really figure out how best to meet everyone's needs. But yes, they will definitely be socialized! LOL My plan right now is to start piano lessons this fall, one child each evening (maybe combining a couple of the younger kids). The boys are really interested in learning to read music, and we let them play the piano now in the evenings (which they all LOVE) so I think it should be good. :)
