The infamous linoleum
The layers, starting from the top:
The light blue is the very top layer, and the brown/gold is the second layer.
This is the third layer--the linoleum with the blue and pink spots on it. The brown/gold layer is glued to it, so it's hard to get a good picture of it. And finally...
This is the red linoleum that's the bottom layer. Below this is the wood floor which is tongue and groove planks. Isn't it pretty? Unfortunately, this is the best-looking area in the whole floor, and it looks pretty bad around the toilet. So it will come out along with everything else. Here's an upclose of the flower detail:

Your post is just screaming asbestos to me! I hope you checked :)
We're doing a little demo in our house. Actually, we're getting new carpet through out since there are many layers of unknown 'stuff'. One of which contains asbestos.
I love the red linoleum! It's so pretty and different from anything you see around now. It's too bad it can't stay...
When Dave's grandparents moved into their house, they got 4 layers too, except it was carpet! Not sure which is worse...
Just put a layer of carpet on top. All those layers will provide great sound insulation and the asbestos will be hidden for another generation!
