The boys' first wedding

On Friday, one of my cousins got married in Cincinnati. We drove 6 hours on Friday, got to the hotel, swam for 30 minutes, got dressed, and went to the wedding. We kept the boys up WAAAYYY too late but they did really well. On Saturday, we woke up, went swimming (notice a theme here?), and went to a brunch held by the bride's family. Then we drove back home. We totally set ourselves up for some serious issues here--new environment, new people, new experiences (they hadn't been in a swimming pool since we were coming back from Ukraine), messed up sleep schedules, different food...you name it, we did pretty much everything we could to throw our boys into chaos. And you know what? They didn't fall for it. ;) We had NO meltdowns all weekend, including yesterday when we were home (we tend to have meltdowns after the stimulation is over and we're back to a comfortable environment). That does not mean there wasn't any discipline--there most definitely was, including at the wedding reception. And while they don't like being disciplined (who does??), they are now responding in age-appropriate ways. I don't know if it will last, but I'm enjoying it in the meantime.

The wedding, reception, and brunch were fantastic and it was great to see some family that I haven't seen in years. Here's a picture of two of the cute handsome young men I went to the wedding with. I didn't get a picture of the third one. ;)

Believe it or not, Dima is actually taller than Zhenya, but he slouches something awful. Here he's leaning back against the door. On another note, anybody have any ideas on getting them to gain weight? I weighed them yesterday and Dima is 32 lbs and Zhenya is 34 lbs. They eat well--lots of protein--and they're growing taller but they just aren't gaining weight!

Oh, they do look very handsome (and at the same time, looks like they're ready for trouble!).

We're having a difficult time in the weight-gain department, too. William has grown about 3 inches in 7 months (1 1/2 of those were in the past 6 weeks!), but hasn't gained much weight at all. He eats constantly, but he's just so active. We have pics of his bio-dad and he's also very thin, so it might be genetic more than anything.

I did a project on diet/nutrition in school for children on either end of the weight spectrum. These are some of the recommendations that we found...hope they help.

1: Add nutritious high-cal foods. Adding dried fruit sprinkled in cereal, nuts tossed into oatmeal or a salad, or shredded cheese cooked into an omelet. Make hot cereal, cocoa, and instant pancakes with whole milk, not water.
2: Offer healthy snacks between meals, including before bedtime. Good choices include a piece of whole-grain toast with peanut butter and all-fruit spread, a slice of deli turkey and cheese (or cream cheese) rolled up together, or a smoothie made with yogurt, milk, frozen fruit, and a squirt of honey. One particular item that is sometimes hit or miss is mixes like chex mix, especially if you can use a cereal that has wheat in it. Adding raisins, peanuts, dried fruit, soybeans, and maybe some m&ms as little goodies make good snacks between meals.
3: Make sure your child has plenty of time to eat at meals and doesn't feel rushed. When possible, avoid scheduling activities around dinnertime. Being active before a meal often sparks their hunger so they gobble while being active afterward can rush digestion so they do not pull all of the nutrition they could out of the food.
4: Fill drinking glasses only halfway at mealtime. Then you can give them more after they have eaten a good amount of food. Sometimes kids (and adults!) drink too much so their stomachs get full so they simply are not hungry to eat all of the food.

If I think of anything else I'll let you know!

Glad you had no meltdowns -- you were probably well prepared.

For my skinny minny I feed her whole milk. She loves milk so that works well.

I have two skinny kids also. Some kids are just hard to put meat on. Everyone wants to fatten them up:):):). As long as they are growing in inches, don't worry about it. They may just be skinny.

For my skinnys, I buy whole milk and other dairy with full fat. Just feed them healthy foods and try not to worry too much. Silas hasn't gained but 2 pounds a year for the last three years or so. He looks like a beanpole, but he's as healthy and energetic as he can be. If they feel good and keep getting taller, they are fine.

They sure are cute:).
